Pacific Wind Quintet Concert

2 August 2026, 4pm

The internationally renowned Pacific Quintet (www.pacific-quintet.com), winner of prestigious competitions (including the ARD Music Competition), will kick off its upcoming Swiss tour in Bregaglia. The tour will take the ensemble to renowned institutions such as the Klosters Music Festival and the Menuhin Festival Gstaad. The programme combines classical works by Mozart, Ibert and Bizet with American operetta (Bernstein) and contemporary Swiss-Japanese music, thus promoting cultural exchange at the highest level.

Three Moods for Woodwind Quintet 木管五重奏のための三つの調べ (2026)
Kenichi Furuya and Jonas Labhart

1. Sound Veins 響脈の調べ きょうみゃくのしらべ
2. Tidal Turn 転流の調べ てんりゅうのしらべ
3. Spray 飛沫の調べ しぶきのしらべ

Over the course of a year, Kenichi Furuya and Jonas Labhart met regularly to work on the score simultaneously. In this method of ‘collaborative composing’, two composers write the score together and solve compositional problems together. Due to the distance between Tokyo and Zurich, most of the meetings took place online, but software made it possible to edit the score simultaneously.

The collaboration between Kenichi Furuya and Jonas Labhart resulted in a calm and productive flow. Periods of concentrated, quiet work alternated with lively discussions about the aim of the piece, its organisation, but also its style, form, harmony and details such as articulation.

The compositions show that people with different ideas, backgrounds, ages, genders and style preferences can work together. In this way, solutions to musical problems can be found that are acceptable to everyone and work for everyone. Such solutions are becoming increasingly important at present; collaborative composing brings people together. Music is created; we engage with people we know only fleetingly, exchange knowledge and practise consideration and compassion. The ability to collaborate and shape a better future together is sharpened.
